Compression Necessities

If using compression for the first time after a vein procedure, you want options! If you are like me, you probably had to wear compression for a period of time before your procedure. The doctor probably prescribed you thigh high compression to wear. You got to choose between open and closed toe and you got to choose the color. Here is your first tip.

Tip #1 if you can't afford to buy two pairs of thigh highs, buy closed toed!

Here's why: After your vein surgery your foot might swell making the band under the open toes too tight.

Tip #2 buy at least one full length compression garment like a legging or full length hosiery.

Here's why: After you have worn the thigh high compression for up to two days after your surgery (or, as prescribed by your doctor) the skin in the area of your thigh where the grip on the thigh high was might become sensitive to the materials in the thigh grip.

Tip #3 have two to three compression garments clean and available for use at all times.

Here's why: After your procedure, the thigh high compression you buy and choose will be put on you and you will have to wear that compression garment for up to 48 hours. This compression will become soiled with blood and sweat. You will want a clean pair while to put on after that duration. And, you will be wearing compression for at least two weeks post proceedure. Having a variety of styles and colors to choose from for those weeks will be SO WONDERFUL!

I love putting on my thigh high's under my night gown in the morning before breakfast and changing into my leggings for exercise. Sometimes I "double up"! I have compression hose that are a bit lighter than the prescription and when I add the compression leggings, I have a full strength.

Tip #4 It usually takes more than one procedure for each leg vein to close down so wear your compression faithfully throughout the process. By "faithfully,” I mean you need to wear your compression at least 6 hours per day. Compression is most needed during times on your feet or while in transportation such as cars, buses, trains and airplanes.
